BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE

“Before It Is Too Late”

Text: Zephaniah 2:2–3

Before the decree is carried out, before the day takes away the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD

comes on you, before the day of the LORD’s anger

comes on you. Seek the LORD, all you meek of the earth, who have behaved in accordance with his justice.

Seek righteousness, seek meekness. Perhaps you will be hidden in the day of the LORD’s anger. -Zephaniah 2:2-3

Introduction:

This passage is a solemn call wrapped in urgency. The prophet speaks into a moment just before judgment falls. Notice the repeated word: “before.” It appears again and again like a ticking clock—before the decree is carried out, before the day passes like chaff, before the fierce anger of the Lord comes. This is not poetry for comfort; it is a warning for action.

The phrase “before the decree is carried out” points to a divine decision already established. God’s judgment is not hypothetical. It is determined. Yet, the window of mercy is still open. The imagery of “the day taking away like chaff” reflects suddenness and irreversibility. Just as chaff is blown away by the wind, so will time slip past those who delay repentance.

Then comes the invitation: “Seek the LORD, all you meek of the earth.” The “meek” here are not the weak, but the humble, those who are willing to submit to God’s authority. These are people who have “behaved in accordance with His justice,” yet are still called to go deeper. Obedience yesterday does not replace seeking God today.

The command is threefold:

*Seek the Lord – pursue His presence.

*Seek righteousness – align your life with His standards.

*Seek meekness – cultivate a posture of humility.

Finally, the text says, “Perhaps you will be hidden in the day of the Lord’s anger.” This is not uncertainty about God’s character, but a call to sincere repentance without presumption. It teaches that deliverance is not earned casually; it is found in earnest seeking.

Illustration

Imagine a storm warning issued ahead of a devastating flood. The sirens sound, the alerts go out, and people are told to seek higher ground. Some delay, thinking there is still time. Others act immediately and are safe. The difference is not in the strength of the storm—but in the response to the warning.

Zephaniah is sounding that siren.

This text confronts spiritual procrastination. It reminds us that:

There is a deadline to grace—not because God is unwilling, but because judgment is real.

*There is a call to humility—pride blinds us to urgency.

*There is a place of refuge—those who seek the Lord can be hidden in Him.

Conclusion

“Before” is the mercy of God in time form. It is God saying, “Act now while you can.” The door is still open, but it will not remain open forever.

Call:

Do not wait for a more convenient time. Seek the Lord now. Lay aside pride. Pursue righteousness. Walk in humility. Because the safest place in the day of God’s anger is the presence of God Himself.

Prayer

Lord, awaken our hearts to urgency. Deliver us from delay and complacency. Teach us to seek You with sincerity, to walk in righteousness, and to live in humility. Hide us in Your mercy when the day of judgment comes. Amen.
