Text: Philippians 2:3-4
“Let nothing be done through selfish motives or self-esteem, but in humbleness of mind let everyone consider others better than themselves. No one should look only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
Introduction
We live in a world that encourages self-promotion, self-glory, and self-interest. Society teaches people to put themselves first at all costs. However, the Kingdom of God operates on a different principle. God calls His children to live with humility, love, and concern for others.
The Apostle Paul reminds believers that true Christianity is not merely about attending church or knowing Scripture; it is about developing the mind and character of Christ. A humble heart is one of the greatest evidences of spiritual maturity.
What Is Humility?
Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less and thinking more about God and others.
Humility recognizes that every blessing, ability, and achievement comes from God.
James 4:10
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.”
1. Avoid Selfish Ambition.
“Let nothing be done through selfish motives...”
Selfish ambition seeks personal gain regardless of the effect on others. It destroys relationships, families, churches, and ministries.
Examples:
-Cain was driven by selfishness and jealousy.
-Absalom sought the throne for personal glory.
-Diotrephes loved preeminence and caused division in the church (3 John 9).
A believer must ask:
+Am I serving God or seeking recognition?
+Am I helping others or promoting myself?
2. Reject Pride and Vanity
“...or self-esteem (vain conceit)...”
Pride was the sin that caused Lucifer's downfall. Pride makes people believe they do not need God or others.
Proverbs 16:18
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
3. Consider Others Better Than Yourself.
“...let everyone consider others better than themselves.”
This does not mean seeing yourself as worthless. Rather, it means treating others with honor, respect, and value.
A humble person:
-Listens before speaking.
-Encourages rather than competes.
-Celebrates the success of others.
-Forgives easily.
Humility builds unity where pride creates division.
4. Care About the Needs of Others.
“No one should look only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
God wants believers to be compassionate and caring.
Examples:
°The Good Samaritan stopped to help a wounded stranger.
°Ruth cared for Naomi.
°The early church shared their resources with those in need.
Christian love is practical. It sees a need and responds.
The Supreme Example: Jesus Christ
Immediately after this passage, Paul points believers to Christ.
Philippians 2:5-8
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus... He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
Jesus:
✓Left heavenly glory.
✓Served humanity.
✓Washed His disciples' feet.
✓Died for sinners.
The greatest person who ever lived became the greatest servant.
Benefits of Humility
1. Humility attracts God's favor.
2. Humility promotes peace and unity.
3. Humility strengthens relationships.
4. Humility opens the door to divine promotion.
5. Humility makes us more like Christ.
1 Peter 5:6
“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.”
Illustration
A fruit-laden tree bends low, while an empty tree stands stiff and proud. Likewise, people who are truly filled with God's grace become more humble, while those who are empty often seek attention and praise.
The more God blesses us, the more humble we should become.
Conclusion.
The Christian life is a life of selfless love. God calls us to reject selfish ambition, overcome pride, honor others, and care for their welfare. The pathway to greatness in God's Kingdom is not through self-exaltation but through humility and service.
When we develop the mind of Christ, our homes, churches, and communities become places of peace, unity, and love.
Call to Commitment
Ask yourself:
^Have I been living for myself or for God and others?
^Is pride hindering my relationship with God?
^Am I concerned about the needs of people around me?
Today, God invites us to embrace the humility of Christ.
Prayer Points
1. Father, remove every trace of pride and selfishness from my heart.
2. Lord, give me the mind of Christ and a servant's heart.
3. Help me to value and honor others above myself.
4. Teach me to care for the needs of those around me.
5. Let humility, love, and unity flourish in my family and church.
6. Father, make me a reflection of Christ in character and conduct.
7. Grant me grace to walk in humility all the days of my life. Amen.
