Text: Romans 5:8
“But God demonstrates his love toward us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Introduction:
There is a kind of love people celebrate when it is deserved; when you perform well, behave right, or meet expectations. But the love of God is not like that. God did not wait for you to improve before He loved you. He loved you at your lowest, at your worst, at your most undeserving.
Romans 5:8 is not just a verse—it is a revelation of the heartbeat of God. It tells us that God’s love is not a reaction to our goodness, but a decision in spite of our brokenness.
1. “But God…” – The Divine Interruption
Those two words—“But God”—change everything.
Humanity was lost in sin. We were far from God, separated, condemned, and helpless. But God stepped into the story. When justice demanded punishment, mercy spoke up. When sin wrote your story, grace rewrote the ending.
You didn’t find God—He came looking for you.
2. “Demonstrates His Love…” – Love in Action
God didn’t just say He loves you. He proved it.
Love that is only spoken can be doubted. But love that is demonstrated cannot be denied. God put His love on display, not with words, but with a sacrifice.
The cross is heaven’s loudest declaration:
“I love you this much.”
Not when you got your life together. Not when you started praying. Not when you became righteous.
But while you were still a sinner.
3. “While We Were Still Sinners…” – Loved in Our Mess.
This is the shocking part.
God didn’t wait for you to change. He loved you in your addiction, in your rebellion, in your confusion, in your weakness.
*At your worst moment—God did not turn away.
*At your darkest hour—God did not withdraw.
*At your most shameful state—God leaned in.
We often think: “Let me fix myself, then I will come to God.” But God says: “Come as you are—I will fix you.”
4. “Christ Died for Us” – The Ultimate Sacrifice.
The proof of God’s love is not in blessings, not in prosperity, not even in answered prayers—it is in the death of Christ.
Jesus didn’t just suffer, He died. And He didn’t die for friends—He died for enemies. He didn’t die for the righteous—He died for sinners.
He took your place.
He bore your punishment.
He carried your shame.
The cross was not an accident but it was intentional love.

The Burning House.
A man once lived in a small house with his son. One night, while the boy was asleep, the house caught fire. The flames spread quickly. Neighbors gathered outside, shouting in panic.
The father rushed into the burning house without hesitation. The smoke was thick, the heat unbearable, but his son was inside.
Moments later, he emerged—burned, injured, barely conscious, but carrying his son safely in his arms.
Someone asked him later, “Why would you risk your life like that?”
The father replied, “He is my son. I didn’t stop to think about the fire—I thought about him.”
That is what God did for you.
Sin was the fire.
You were trapped inside.
And God did not stay at a distance, He stepped into the flames.
Jesus didn’t just risk His life but He gave it.
Conclusion
Romans 5:8 is a mirror and a message.
-It shows us who we were—sinners.
-It shows us who God is—love.
-And it shows us what Christ did—He died for us.
You are not loved because you are perfect.
You are loved because God is love.
Altar Call
Maybe you’ve been running from God, thinking you are too far gone. Maybe guilt has been whispering, “You are not worthy.” Maybe shame has been telling you, “God cannot love someone like you.”
But Romans 5:8 answers all of that.
God already knew your worst—and still chose the cross.
Today, don’t try to clean yourself up. Come as you are.
If Christ died for you while you were still a sinner, how much more will He receive you now that you are coming to Him?
Prayer
Prayer of Surrender:
Lord Jesus, I come to You just as I am. I cannot save myself. Thank You for loving me even when I was lost. Thank You for dying for me. Today, I receive Your love. Forgive my sins, cleanse my heart, and make me new. I give my life to You. Amen.
Prayer of Gratitude:
Father, thank You for a love that never gave up on me. Help me to live in the reality of that love and to share it with others. Let my life be a response to Your sacrifice. Amen.
Final Charge:
Never forget this truth:
You may fail, you may fall, you may struggle—but you are already loved.
And that love has a name: Jesus Christ.
