Text: 2 Kings 20:1–3
Introduction
Life is a journey with many unexpected turns. A man may be surrounded by wealth, power, influence, and achievements today, but tomorrow he may stand face to face with his own frailty. King Hezekiah was a righteous king who brought reforms to Judah and trusted God, yet the day came when he received a message that no one wishes to hear: “Set your house in order, for you are going to die and not live.”
God’s message to Hezekiah was not merely about arranging his kingdom; it was a divine call to examine every area of his life. It is also God’s message to us today: our relationship with Him, our families, our priorities, and our spiritual condition must be put in order before eternity calls.
1. The Certainty of Life’s Unexpected Moments
“In those days Hezekiah became sick and was near death…”
Hezekiah did not expect sickness to knock on the door of the palace. His crown could not protect him from pain, and his authority could not stop death.
Illustration
A wealthy man may own many houses but cannot buy one extra second when his appointed time comes. A person may have a beautiful watch on his wrist, but he does not control the time written on God’s clock.
The greatest preparation for the uncertainties of life is not money or position—it is a heart that is right with God.
2. The Urgent Call to Set Our House in Order
“Thus says the LORD, ‘Set your house in order…’”
A disordered life can hide behind a successful appearance. God is interested not only in our public achievements but also in our private devotion.
We must put in order:
Our relationship with God—through repentance, faith, and obedience.
Our family life—through love, forgiveness, and godly leadership.
Our character—through integrity and holiness.
Our priorities—placing God above possessions and pleasures.
Illustration
A farmer who ignores a crack in the wall of his barn may lose the entire structure when the storm comes. The wise person repairs the weakness before the storm arrives.
3. The Power of a Sincere Prayer
“Then he turned his face toward the wall and prayed to the LORD…”
When Hezekiah heard the sentence of death, he did not argue with Isaiah, blame others, or despair. He turned to the One who controls life and death.
Turning his face to the wall symbolized removing every distraction and seeking God personally. Sometimes God allows us to face a wall so that we can discover the doorway of prayer.
Illustration
A child who is in trouble does not run to strangers but runs into the arms of his father. Likewise, when life becomes overwhelming, the safest place for God’s children is the place of prayer.
4. God Sees the Tears of a Broken Heart
“And Hezekiah wept bitterly.”
God does not ignore sincere tears. Tears of repentance, humility, and dependence speak a language that heaven understands.
A proud heart says, “I can handle this by myself.”
A humble heart says, “Lord, without You I can do nothing.”
Conclusion
Hezekiah’s story teaches us that God can speak even in our darkest moments. A warning from God is an expression of His mercy, giving us an opportunity to change, repent, and draw closer to Him.
The question today is not, “How long will I live?” but “Am I ready whenever God calls me?”
Do not wait for a hospital bed, a crisis, or a final moment to put your house in order. The best time to make peace with God is now.
Altar Call
1. To those who have not surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ:
The greatest disorder in a person’s life is separation from God. Today, Christ is calling you to come home. Repent of your sins and receive His forgiveness.
2. To believers who have neglected their spiritual lives:
Return to your first love. Rebuild your prayer altar. Make right the things that have been broken.
3. To those facing sickness, fear, or impossible situations:
Turn your face toward God as Hezekiah did. The God who hears prayers is still able to show mercy and perform miracles.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word that calls us to examine our lives. Search our hearts and reveal every area that is not pleasing to You. Give us the grace to set our homes, our relationships, and our spiritual lives in order.
Lord, where there is sin, grant us repentance; where there is bitterness, give us forgiveness; where there is weakness, release Your strength. Teach us to seek You with a sincere heart as Hezekiah did.
For everyone who is sick, troubled, or facing a difficult situation, let Your mercy speak. Restore, heal, and renew according to Your perfect will.
Help us to live every day prepared for Your coming and committed to Your purpose.
