Text: "Just as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, which in the same way gave themselves up to sexual immorality and went after unnatural flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." — Jude 1:7
Introduction.
Jude wrote to warn believers against false teachers and ungodly living. To emphasize the seriousness of rebellion against God, he points to Sodom and Gomorrah. These cities became a permanent warning that God's patience is great, but His judgment is certain. The account reminds us that God is both holy and merciful, calling people to repentance before judgment comes.
Supporting Text: "The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment." (2 Peter 2:9)
1. Sin Begins When People Reject God's Authority.
The people of Sodom and Gomorrah deliberately abandoned God's standards. They normalized what God had forbidden and pursued sinful desires without repentance. Whenever people reject God's Word, moral confusion follows.
Today, believers are called to stand on God's truth, even when the world celebrates what God condemns.
2. Sin Has Serious Consequences
Jude says these cities are "set forth as an example." Their destruction demonstrates that God does not overlook persistent, unrepentant sin. His judgment is not arbitrary but a righteous response to rebellion.
God's warnings are expressions of His mercy. He calls people to turn from sin before judgment comes.
3. God's Grace Offers a Way of Escape.
The message of Sodom is not only about judgment—it also points to God's willingness to save those who trust Him. Lot was rescued because God showed mercy. Likewise, through Jesus Christ, God offers forgiveness, cleansing, and new life to everyone who repents and believes.
No one is beyond the reach of God's grace if they come to Him with a repentant heart.
Illustration
Imagine a bridge with a large warning sign: "Bridge Out Ahead." A wise driver does not ignore the sign; he turns around and finds a safe road. The sign is not meant to harm him but to save his life.
The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is like that warning sign. God preserved this account in Scripture to urge us to turn from sin and choose the path of life.
Practical Applications.
Take God's Word seriously and do not treat sin lightly.
Resist cultural pressure when it conflicts with God's truth.
Examine your own life and repent of any known sin.
Share the gospel with compassion, calling others to repentance and hope in Christ.
Conclusion.
Jude 1:7 reminds us that God is holy and just, but also merciful. Sodom and Gomorrah stand as a warning, while the cross of Christ stands as God's invitation to forgiveness. We must not ignore either message. Today is the day to turn to God and walk in holiness.
Altar Call.
If there is any area of your life where you have resisted God's will, do not harden your heart. Jesus Christ died and rose again so that sinners could be forgiven and transformed. Come to Him in repentance and faith. He is ready to receive everyone who truly turns to Him.
Closing Prayer.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your holy Word that warns us and leads us to life. Forgive us for every sin and cleanse our hearts through the blood of Jesus Christ. Give us the courage to stand for Your truth and the grace to live holy lives in a sinful world. Help us to walk in obedience and to share Your message of salvation with others. Keep us faithful until the day we see You face to face. In Jesus' name, Amen.
