Topic: "Growing in Love, Standing in Holiness, Ready for His Coming"

Main Text: 1 Thessalonians 3:12–13

: John 13:34–35; Hebrews 12:14; Matthew 24:42–44; 1 Peter 1:15–16.

Introduction

We live in a world where love is growing cold and holiness is often ignored. Yet the apostle Paul prayed that believers would not merely survive spiritually but would increase in love and become firm in holiness as they await the return of Jesus Christ.

Love and holiness are inseparable. Genuine love produces holy living, and true holiness is expressed through love. The Christian life is not only about preparing for death but preparing for Christ's glorious return.

Paul's prayer reveals three important desires for every believer.

I. Increase and abound in Love (Verse 12)

"May the Lord make you increase and abound in love..."

Love is not meant to remain stagnant. Spiritual maturity is measured not only by knowledge but by love.

Paul prayed for:

• Love among believers.
• Love toward all people.
• Love that continually grows.

Jesus said people would know His disciples by their love.

Illustration

Imagine a river. When water keeps flowing, it remains fresh and life-giving. But when water stops moving, it becomes stagnant and foul.

Many Christians have stopped growing in love. They attend church but carry bitterness, jealousy, and unforgiveness.

God wants our love to flow continually.

Ask yourself:

• Is my love growing?
• Do I forgive easily?
• Do I genuinely care for others?

Growing love is evidence of spiritual growth.

II. Established in Holiness (Verse 13)

"...that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness..."

Paul understood that a loving heart becomes a holy heart.

Holiness means belonging completely to God.

God is not looking merely for outward religion but for hearts established in righteousness.

Many people appear holy before men but are far from God.

The Lord strengthens hearts that are surrendered to Him.

Illustration

A building with a weak foundation may look beautiful, but when storms come, it collapses.

Likewise, many lives collapse because holiness was never established in the heart.

Character matters more than appearance.

God wants stable believers, not unstable Christians who are holy on Sunday and worldly during the week.

III. Live Every Day Ready for Christ's Coming (Verse 13)

"...at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints."

Paul ends with eternity.

The Christian life is lived with expectation.

Jesus is coming again.

Not everyone is preparing for that day, but every believer should.

His coming should influence:

• How we speak.
• How we love.
• How we forgive.
• How we serve.
• How we live.

Illustration:

A bride carefully prepares for her wedding day because she knows the bridegroom is coming.

She does not wait until the last hour.

Likewise, the Church is the Bride of Christ.

Every day should be preparation day.

Practical Lessons

1. Pray daily for greater love.
2. Remove bitterness before it destroys your heart.
3. Pursue holiness even when the world rejects it.
4. Remember that Jesus may return at any time.
5. Let every decision be made in light of eternity.

Illustration.

A missionary once visited an elderly Christian woman who was seriously ill. Her room was simple, but beside her bed was a neatly folded white dress.

The missionary asked, "Why do you keep that dress there every day?"

She smiled and replied, "I know Jesus may not come today, but if He comes tonight, I want my heart to be as ready as my clothes."

She understood something many people forget: preparation for Christ is not about garments but about the condition of the heart.

When Jesus comes, wealth will not matter. Titles will not matter. Popularity will not matter.

Only hearts filled with love and established in holiness will rejoice at His appearing.

Conclusion. 

Paul's prayer is still God's desire for every believer:

• Grow in love.
• Stand firm in holiness.
• Live in constant expectation of Christ's return.

Love prepares the heart. Holiness purifies the life. Hope keeps the believer watching.

When these three are present, we can face the coming of Christ with confidence instead of fear.

Closing Challenge

If Christ returned today:

• Would your love reflect His love?
• Would your heart be established in holiness?
• Would you be ready to meet Him with joy?

May God cause us to increase and abound in love, establish our hearts in holiness, and keep us faithfully watching until the glorious appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
