The Debt that never Ends

Text: Romans 13:8
"Do not owe anyone anything, except to love one another. For he who loves others has fulfilled the Law."

Introduction:

Most debts have a due date. When you repay a loan, the obligation ends. But Paul speaks of one debt that can never be fully repaid—the debt of love. Because God has loved us through Christ, we are forever obligated to love others. Love is not merely an emotion; it is a lifestyle that reflects the heart of God.

Jesus loved us when we were unworthy, forgave us when we were guilty, and accepted us when we were rejected. Therefore, every believer is called to extend that same love to others.

1. Love Is a Debt Every Christian Owes

Paul does not forbid all borrowing; rather, he teaches believers to be responsible and faithful. Yet he says there is one debt that remains forever—the obligation to love.

The love we received from Christ can never be repaid to Him directly, so we repay it by loving His people.

Jesus taught that whatever we do for the least of His brothers, we do for Him (Matthew 25:40).

Illustration

Imagine a man rescued from drowning by a stranger. He searches for the rescuer to repay him but never finds him. Instead, whenever he sees someone struggling in water, he jumps in to save them. In that way, he honors the one who once saved him.

Likewise, we honor Christ by loving those around us.

2. Love Fulfills God's Law

The Law commands us not to steal, murder, commit adultery, or bear false witness. Genuine love naturally avoids these sins because love seeks another person's good.

When love rules the heart:

• We forgive instead of seeking revenge.
• We help instead of harming.
• We encourage instead of condemning.
• We unite instead of dividing.

Love is not the cancellation of God's commandments; it is the spirit behind them.

3. Love Is the Greatest Evidence of Spiritual Maturity

Many people measure spirituality by knowledge, gifts, or religious activities. God measures it by love.

A person may preach eloquently, sing beautifully, pray passionately, and still fail if love is absent.

Emotional Illustration

A little girl visited her aging grandmother every evening. She could not cook, preach, or give money, but she held her grandmother's hand and whispered, "Grandma, I love you."

When the grandmother died, the family discovered that those simple visits had been the greatest comfort in her final days.

Sometimes the greatest ministry is simply loving someone who feels forgotten.

4. Christ Is Our Perfect Example of Love

The greatest demonstration of love was not spoken but displayed on the cross.

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)

Jesus loved:

• His disciples despite their weaknesses.
• Peter after his denial.
• The thief on the cross.
• Even those who crucified Him.

His love was sacrificial, forgiving, and unconditional.

Practical Applications

• Love your family without favoritism.
• Forgive those who have offended you.
• Help those in need.
• Pray for those who persecute you.
• Speak words that build others up.
• Let every action reflect Christ's love.

Conclusion:

Earthly debts may be settled, but the debt of love remains every day we live.

The church grows through love. Families are healed through love. Communities are transformed through love. The world recognizes Christ through love.

Let us leave today determined to owe no one anything except a continual debt of Christlike love.

If you have never experienced God's love through Jesus Christ, today is the day to receive Him. Once His love fills your heart, you will have both the desire and the power to love others.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us when we were lost in sin. Fill our hearts with Your Holy Spirit so that we may genuinely love one another. Remove hatred, bitterness, envy, and unforgiveness from us. Make us living examples of Christ's love, so that through our lives others may come to know You. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.  .
