Theme: "From the Grave to Grace"

Text: Colossians 2:13

"And when you were dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses." (Colossians 2:13)

Introduction

One of the greatest miracles is not the healing of a blind eye or the raising of Lazarus. The greatest miracle is when a spiritually dead sinner is made alive by Jesus Christ.

Many people are walking, talking, laughing, and working, yet they are spiritually dead. A corpse cannot hear, move, or help itself. In the same way, a sinner cannot save himself. Paul reminds us that before Christ, we were dead—not sick, not weak, but dead in sin. Yet God did not abandon us. He came into our graveyard and breathed eternal life into us.

I. The Tragedy of Spiritual Death

"And you, being dead in your sins..."

Death means separation. Sin separated humanity from God.

A dead person cannot revive himself. He cannot respond to voices or stretch out his hand for help.

Likewise, no amount of morality, education, religion, wealth, or good works can resurrect a sinner.

Illustration

Imagine a mother sitting beside the body of her only son. She calls his name repeatedly. Tears roll down her cheeks. She shakes him gently, hoping for one more smile. But death gives no answer.

That is exactly how sin leaves the human soul. Heaven calls, the Scriptures speak, conscience warns—but the spiritually dead cannot respond until Christ gives life.

Without Jesus, we are living funerals.

II. Christ Entered Our Grave

"...He made you alive together with Him..."

God did not wait for us to become better. He came while we were dead.

Jesus entered humanity's cemetery.

He stepped into our darkness.

He carried our sins to Calvary.

He died so the dead could live.

His resurrection became the source of our resurrection.

Illustration. 

There was once a little girl trapped inside a burning house. Flames surrounded every exit. She screamed for help.

Her father heard her cry.

Without thinking of his own safety, he rushed through the fire. The flames burned his hands and scarred his body, but he carried his daughter out alive.

Years later, whenever she looked at the scars on her father's hands, she remembered, "Those scars are the reason I am alive."

Every nail print in Christ's hands says, "You are alive because I entered the fire for you."

III. Complete Forgiveness

"...having forgiven you all trespasses."

Notice the word all.

•Not some.

•Not many.

-All.

The proud sins.

-The secret sins.

-The repeated sins.

-The shameful sins.

-The forgotten sins.

Every sin placed upon Christ was forgiven.

God did not merely cover our sins; He cancelled our debt.

Illustration

A prisoner had spent years behind bars. One morning the prison guard opened the cell and said,

"Your debt has been fully paid. You are free."

The prisoner replied,

"I have no money."

The guard smiled.

"You misunderstand. Someone else paid everything."

That is the Gospel.

Jesus paid what we could never pay.

The prison door is open.

Why remain inside?

IV. From Death to Purpose. 

When God gives life, He gives purpose.

The one who was dead now worships.

The one who cursed now blesses.

The one who hated now loves.

The one who lived for self now lives for Christ.

Life in Christ is not merely existence.

It is transformation.

Illustration

A violin was discovered in an old dusty attic. Its strings were broken. Cobwebs covered it.

People thought it was worthless.

A skilled musician picked it up.

He repaired the strings.

He cleaned away the dust.

Then he played the most beautiful melody anyone had ever heard.

The instrument had not changed owners only.

It had found the hands of the Master.

Many lives seem broken by sin.

But when Jesus takes hold of a life, He creates a beautiful song from what the world had discarded.

V. An Invitation to the Living Christ

Perhaps someone listening feels empty.

✓You smile outside but cry inside.

✓You have money but no peace.

✓Friends but no joy.

✓Religion but no relationship.

Today Christ still calls dead souls to life.

The same voice that called Lazarus from the tomb is calling sinners today.

He does not ask you to resurrect yourself.

He simply asks you to come to Him.

Conclusion. 

The cross is Heaven's declaration that no sinner is beyond grace.

The empty tomb is Heaven's announcement that death has been defeated.

Colossians 2:13 reminds us that we were once dead—but now we are alive because of Christ.

Closing Illustration. 

A missionary once visited a cemetery where every grave had flowers except one.

Curious, he asked why.

An old woman quietly replied,

"That grave belongs to my son. Everyone believed he died without hope."

The missionary gently answered,

"If he trusted Christ, that grave is not the end. It is only a waiting room."

The Christian's story never ends in the cemetery.

Because Jesus lives, those who are alive in Him shall live forever.

Altar Call

If you are still carrying the burden of sin, come to Christ today.

He is still making dead people live.

He is still forgiving all trespasses.

He is still changing broken lives.

Come to the One who entered your grave so that you might enter His life.

"You were dead... but He made you alive together with Him." (Colossians 2:13)
