Topic: "God sent me before you"

Text: Genesis 45:5 "So do not be grieved now, or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life."

Introduction

Genesis 45 records one of the most touching moments in the Bible. After years of betrayal, slavery, false accusation, imprisonment, and suffering, Joseph finally revealed his identity to his brothers. Instead of seeking revenge, Joseph recognized God's sovereign hand behind every painful event of his life. What his brothers intended for evil, God used for good.

This passage teaches that God can transform our greatest trials into instruments of blessing for many people.

God's purpose is greater than man's wickedness.

I. God Is Sovereign Over the Events of Our Lives. 

Joseph's brothers sold him out of jealousy (Genesis 37:23–28). To them it was an act of hatred, but Joseph saw something greater.

He said, "God sent me before you."

God did not approve of their sin, but He overruled it to accomplish His divine plan.

Romans 8:28 – "All things work together for good to those who love God."

Proverbs 19:21 – "Many are the plans in a man's heart, but the counsel of the LORD shall stand."

Isaiah 46:10 – God's purpose shall stand.

Lesson:

When you cannot understand what God is doing, trust that He is still in control.

II. God Can Turn Betrayal Into Blessing

Joseph experienced rejection by his own family before he became the ruler of Egypt.

The pit became the pathway to the palace.

Sometimes the people who reject you unknowingly push you toward God's greater purpose.

Illustrations

David was hunted by Saul before becoming king (1 Samuel 24).

Jesus was betrayed by Judas, yet through His death came salvation (Luke 22; Acts 2:23–24).

Lesson 

Your present suffering may be preparing you for tomorrow's promotion.

III. God's Purpose Is Bigger Than Personal Comfort. 

Joseph's suffering was not only about Joseph. God positioned him in Egypt to save countless lives during the famine.

He was preserved so that others could be preserved.

Esther 4:14 – "Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"

Acts 13:36 – David served God's purpose in his generation.

Lesson 

God blesses His children so they can become blessings to others.

IV. Forgiveness Releases God's Blessings. 

Joseph refused bitterness.

Instead of condemning his brothers, he comforted them.

Forgiveness allowed healing to begin within the family.

Ephesians 4:31–32, Matthew 6:14–15, Colossians 3:13

Lesson 

You cannot fully walk in God's purpose while holding on to unforgiveness.

V. God Uses His People to Preserve Life. 

Joseph declared that God sent him "to preserve life."

God still sends His people today:

-To preach the Gospel.

-To encourage the discouraged.

-To feed the hungry.

-To bring hope to the hopeless.

-To point people to Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life.

Jesus Himself came "to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:10).

Illustration

A skilled weaver works from the underside of a tapestry. From below, the threads appear tangled and confusing. But when the tapestry is turned over, a beautiful design is revealed.

Likewise, while we are living through trials, life may seem confusing. But from God's perspective, every thread is part of His perfect design.

Application:

Ask yourself:

-Am I trusting God in difficult seasons?

-Have I allowed bitterness to take root?

-Am I fulfilling God's purpose where He has placed me?

-Can I see God's hand even in painful experiences?

Conclusion. 

Joseph understood a profound truth: people may act out of hatred, but God acts out of love and purpose. His suffering was not wasted. Every pit, every chain, every prison cell became part of God's plan to save nations and preserve His covenant people.

No matter what you have experienced, God is able to redeem your pain for His glory and for the blessing of others.

As Joseph later declared:

"You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good..." (Genesis 50:20).

Altar Call

Perhaps you have been wounded by betrayal, rejection, disappointment, or injustice. Today, Jesus invites you to surrender your pain to Him. He can heal your heart, forgive your sins, and give your life a new purpose. Come to Christ in faith, trust His sovereign plan, and allow Him to turn your trials into testimonies.

Prayer Points

1. Father, help me trust Your purpose even when I do not understand my circumstances.

2. Lord, heal every wound caused by betrayal and disappointment.

3. Give me the grace to forgive those who have hurt me.

4. Turn every evil plan against my life into a testimony of Your glory.

5. Make my life a channel of blessing and preservation to my family, church, and generation.

6. Lord Jesus, fulfill Your purpose in my life, and let my life bring glory to Your name. Amen.
