Topic: FAITH THAT DARES TO COME, EVEN IN THE DARK
Text: John 3:2

Introduction

John 3:2 says:
"The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him."

This verse introduces us to Nicodemus—a Pharisee, a ruler, a religious authority—yet a man with questions. Despite his status, knowledge, and influence, something was missing. And so, he came to Jesus… by night.

Why at night? Was it fear? Was it caution? Was it secrecy? Perhaps all of these. Yet what stands out is not just the timing, but the courage. Nicodemus had a faith that dared to move—even when surrounded by uncertainty, fear, and darkness.

This is the kind of faith God honors: faith that moves, even when it is not yet fully formed.

The verse begins, “The same came to Jesus by night…”

The phrase “came to Jesus” is crucial. It shows intentionality. Nicodemus did not stay in his comfort zone. He pursued truth. The darkness did not stop him; it became the backdrop of his seeking.

Night in Scripture often symbolizes:

• Ignorance
• Fear
• Spiritual blindness
• Hidden struggles

Nicodemus represents those who are religious outwardly but inwardly searching. He knew the law, but he did not yet know life. Still, he came.

Then he said, “Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God…”

Notice the progression:

• He acknowledges Jesus as Rabbi (Teacher)
• He recognizes divine backing (“come from God”)
• He testifies to observable evidence (“no man can do these miracles…”)

However, his understanding was incomplete. He saw Jesus as a teacher—but not yet as Savior. Yet Jesus did not reject him. Why? Because even imperfect faith that moves toward Christ is welcomed.

Nicodemus came with limited revelation, but genuine sincerity.

Imagine a man lost in a dense forest at night. He cannot see the full path ahead. The darkness is thick, and fear whispers at every step. Suddenly, he sees a faint light in the distance.

He doesn’t understand everything about the light; where it leads, how far it is; but he begins to walk toward it.

That step though small is powerful.

Nicodemus was like that man. The religious system he knew could not give him light. But he saw something in Jesus, a flicker of divine truth and he moved toward it.

Faith is not always loud and confident. Sometimes, it is quiet, cautious, and trembling but it still moves.

Lessons from Nicodemus’ Faith

1. Faith Moves Despite Fear
   Nicodemus risked reputation and status. True faith often requires stepping beyond what is comfortable.
2. Faith Seeks Truth Honestly.
   He did not pretend to know everything. He came with questions. God is not intimidated by sincere seekers. 
3. Faith Begins Before Full Understanding
   You don’t need complete revelation to come to Jesus. You just need willingness.
4. Faith Grows in Encounter
   This nighttime visit began a journey. Later, Nicodemus would defend Jesus (John 7:50–51) and help bury Him (John 19:39). What began in darkness matured into bold devotion.

Conclusion

Nicodemus came in the night but he did not remain in darkness.

The beauty of this text is not that he came perfectly, but that he came at all.

There are many today:

• Sitting in church but still searching
• Carrying titles but lacking transformation
• Surrounded by light but internally struggling

The message is clear: Come anyway.

-Come with your doubts.
-Come with your questions.
-Come in your darkness.

Because when you come to Jesus, darkness does not have the final say, light does.

Altar Call

Tonight, just like Nicodemus, you may find yourself in a place of inner darkness.

You may:

• Know religion but not relationship
• Feel uncertain about your faith
• Be afraid of what others will think
• Be searching for truth quietly

But hear this: Jesus is available—even in the night.

You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just need to come.

If you are ready to take that step, whether small or bold—pray this prayer:

“Lord Jesus, I come to You just as I am.
I may not understand everything, but I believe You are from God.
Shine Your light into my darkness.
Forgive my sins, cleanse my heart, and reveal Yourself to me.
From today, I choose to follow You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

If you prayed that prayer, your journey has begun, not in darkness, but in light.

Faith that dares to come in the dark will always find the Light.
