The Power of the Holy Spirit
Text: Acts 1:8
"But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." — Acts 1:8 (NKJV)

Introduction:
There is a great difference between human ability and divine ability. Human strength can achieve only what is naturally possible, but the Holy Spirit enables believers to accomplish what is humanly impossible.
Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He did not tell His disciples to depend on their experience, intelligence, or zeal. Instead, He commanded them to wait until they were clothed with power from on high (Luke 24:49). Jesus knew that without the Holy Spirit, they would struggle; with the Holy Spirit, they would transform the world.
Today, many Christians have knowledge without power, activity without anointing, and religion without divine influence. God is calling His people back to dependence on the Holy Spirit.
What is the Power of the Holy Spirit?
The word translated "power" in Acts 1:8 is the Greek word dunamis, meaning miraculous, dynamic, supernatural power. It is the power that changes lives, defeats sin, heals the sick, strengthens the weak, and enables believers to fulfill God's purpose.
The Holy Spirit is not merely an influence; He is the third Person of the Trinity who lives in every believer and empowers God's people for holy living and effective service.
I. The Holy Spirit gives Power to live a Victorious Life.
Before believers can influence others, they must first experience victory within themselves.
Without the Holy Spirit:
- Temptation easily overcomes us.
- Fear dominates us.
- Discouragement weakens us.
With the Holy Spirit:
- We overcome temptation.
- We receive boldness.
- We bear the fruit of the Spirit.
- We live in obedience to Christ.
Paul reminds us that God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
Victory over sin is not achieved by human determination alone but by yielding daily to the Holy Spirit.
II. The Holy Spirit turns ordinary people into Extraordinary Servants
God has always used ordinary people.
- Moses said he could not speak.
- Gideon considered himself insignificant.
- David was a shepherd.
- The disciples were fishermen and common men.
Yet, through the Holy Spirit, they became mighty instruments in God's hands.
God does not call the qualified; He qualifies those He calls by giving them His Spirit.

Peter before and after Pentecost
Peter is one of the clearest examples of the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.
Before Pentecost:
- Peter denied Jesus three times.
- He was afraid of a servant girl.
- He hid behind locked doors with the other disciples.
After Pentecost:
- Peter stood publicly before thousands.
- He boldly declared that Jesus is Lord and Christ.
- About three thousand people were converted in one day (Acts 2:41).
What made the difference?
It was not education. It was not personality. It was not experience.
The difference was the power of the Holy Spirit.
The same Spirit that transformed Peter can transform every believer today.
III. The Holy Spirit gives boldness for God's Assignment
Jesus promised that believers would become His witnesses.
Witnesses are not merely people who possess information; they are people who testify boldly because they have experienced Christ.
Many believers remain silent because of:
- Fear of rejection.
- Fear of criticism.
- Fear of failure.
The Holy Spirit removes fear and replaces it with courage.
Throughout the book of Acts, the disciples repeatedly prayed for boldness, and the Holy Spirit filled them afresh.
When the Holy Spirit controls a believer, fear loses its grip.
IV. The Holy Spirit gives Power for every Assignment
God never assigns a task without supplying the necessary power.
Whatever assignment God has given you:
- Raising a family.
- Building a ministry.
- Serving in the church.
- Evangelizing.
- Leading others.
His Spirit is sufficient.
Zechariah 4:6 declares:
"Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit."
Your success will not depend primarily on your natural abilities but on your dependence upon God's Spirit.
V. How can we receive Fresh Power?
1. Desire God's Presence
God fills those who hunger and thirst for Him.
2. Live in Obedience
The Holy Spirit works freely in yielded hearts.
3. Pray Earnestly
The early church continually prayed until the Spirit came.
4. Walk Daily with God
The Spirit continually fills believers who remain surrendered to Him.
Ask yourself:
- Am I relying on my own strength or on the Holy Spirit?
- Is fear preventing me from fulfilling God's purpose?
- Do I seek the Spirit's guidance daily?
- Am I willing to be used by God regardless of my weaknesses?
God specializes in using ordinary people who completely depend on Him.
Conclusion.
The Holy Spirit transformed frightened disciples into fearless apostles.
He transformed Peter from a man who denied Christ into a preacher whose message shook Jerusalem.
The same Holy Spirit is still available today.
You may feel weak, inadequate, or fearful, but when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, He gives you power to live victoriously, serve faithfully, and fulfill God's divine purpose.
Remember:
It is not your education but His power. It is not your talent but His anointing. It is not your strength but His Spirit.
Altar Call
Perhaps you have relied on your own strength for too long. Maybe fear, discouragement, or sin has held you back from God's purpose. Jesus still offers the gift of the Holy Spirit to those who come to Him in faith.
If you have never surrendered your life to Christ, this is the time to repent and trust Him as your Lord and Savior. If you are already a believer but long for a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit, come with an open heart and ask God to renew you.
Prayer Points
- Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit.
- Lord Jesus, baptize me with fresh power from on high.
- Holy Spirit, fill every area of my life and take complete control.
- Every spirit of fear, discouragement, and intimidation, leave my life in Jesus' name.
- Give me boldness to witness for Christ wherever I go.
- Empower me to fulfill every assignment You have entrusted to me.
- Let my life become a testimony of Your supernatural power.
- From today, I shall live and serve by the power of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus' mighty name. Amen.
