Theme: Not by Might, Nor by Power, But by My Spirit
Text: Zechariah 4:6
Supporting Texts: Isaiah 40:29–31; John 15:5; Philippians 4:13
Introduction.
There are moments in life when we discover that human strength has limits. Money cannot buy peace. Education cannot guarantee success. Influence cannot overcome every obstacle. Even the strongest body grows weak, and the wisest mind sometimes runs out of answers.
The people of Judah experienced such a season. They had returned from exile with excitement to rebuild the temple, but opposition, discouragement, and hardship caused the work to stop. Zerubbabel, the governor, faced a task that was bigger than his resources. Humanly speaking, rebuilding the temple seemed impossible.
Then God sent a message through the prophet Zechariah:
"Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit," says the LORD of hosts. (Zechariah 4:6)
God was reminding Zerubbabel that His work is never accomplished by human strength alone but by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Today, that same message speaks to every believer.

The Powerless Fan
Imagine entering a room on a hot afternoon. A beautiful ceiling fan hangs above you. It is clean, modern, and perfectly installed. Yet the room remains unbearably hot because there is no electricity.
The fan has everything except power.
Many Christians are like that fan. They have education, talent, experience, and even good intentions, but they are trying to live the Christian life disconnected from the power of the Holy Spirit. Activity without God's power produces exhaustion rather than lasting fruit.
I. Human Strength Has Limits.
Isaiah 40:30
"Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall utterly fall."
Everyone has limits.
- Physical strength fades.
- Financial resources diminish.
- Intelligence reaches its limits.
- Friends sometimes disappoint.
- Human wisdom cannot solve every problem.
The strongest person eventually becomes weak.
•Even Moses became tired.
•Even Elijah became discouraged.
•Even Peter failed.
If these great servants of God had limitations, so do we.
Application:
Never make your own ability your greatest confidence.
II. God's Spirit Has No Limits.
God never becomes tired.
He never runs out of wisdom.
He never lacks resources.
Isaiah 40:31 declares:
"But those who wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength..."
Notice that God does not merely give strength; He renews it.
The Holy Spirit supplies fresh strength for every new challenge.
When your strength ends, God's power begins.
III. Depending on God Produces Lasting Victory
Jesus said:
"Without Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5)
Notice He did not say we could do "a few things."
He said nothing.
Many believers begin their day with planning but without praying.
They trust their schedule more than the Holy Spirit.
God wants us to depend on Him daily.
Prayer is not a religious routine; it is an admission that we cannot succeed without God.
IV. The Holy Spirit Makes the Impossible Possible.
Zerubbabel faced a mountain of opposition.
Yet God asked,
"Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain." (Zechariah 4:7).
Every mountain is small before God's Spirit.
The mountain may be:
- Financial hardship
- Family conflict
- Sickness
- Unemployment
- Spiritual weakness
- Ministry challenges
What human effort cannot overcome, the Spirit of God can remove.
ILLUSTRATIONS:
A missionary travelled to a remote village where there was no electricity or modern transportation. The roads were dangerous, and many advised him to give up. Yet he prayed daily, depending on the Holy Spirit.
Years later, churches had been planted throughout the region, schools were established, and many lives had been transformed.
When someone asked him the secret of his success, he replied,
"Whenever people praised me, I remembered that I was only the vessel. The power always belonged to God."
That is the difference between relying on human strength and relying on God's Spirit.
Lessons:
1. God's work cannot be accomplished by human effort alone.
2. The Holy Spirit is our true source of strength.
3. Weakness is often the place where God reveals His greatest power.
4. Every impossible situation becomes possible when God is involved.
5. Dependence on God should be a daily lifestyle.
ALTAR CALL:
Ask yourself:
- Am I relying more on my abilities than on God?
- Have I replaced prayer with self-confidence?
- Am I trying to fight spiritual battles with human strength?
- Have I become spiritually exhausted because I have disconnected from the Holy Spirit?
Today God is inviting you back to complete dependence upon Him.
Conclusion.
The message to Zerubbabel is still God's message today:
"Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of hosts."
•Your education is valuable, but it is not enough.
•Your experience is helpful, but it is not enough.
•Your connections may open doors, but they are not enough.
The Holy Spirit is the difference between struggling and overcoming, between merely working and truly bearing fruit.
When God's Spirit empowers your life, mountains become plains, weakness becomes strength, and impossibilities become testimonies.
Prayer Points:
1. Father, forgive me for trusting in my own strength more than in Your Spirit.
2. Lord, fill me afresh with the power of the Holy Spirit.
3. Every mountain standing before my destiny, become a plain in Jesus' name.
4. Renew my strength where I have become weary and discouraged.
5. Help me to depend on You every day and not on my own understanding.
6. Let Your Spirit guide my decisions, empower my service, and strengthen my faith.
7. May my life bring glory to You through the power of Your Spirit.
Closing Declaration
"I refuse to trust in human strength alone. By the power of the Holy Spirit, I shall overcome every obstacle, fulfill God's purpose for my life, and finish my race with joy. My strength comes from the Lord. In Jesus' name, Amen."
