Romans 3:3–4

“For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make God’s faithfulness without effect? Absolutely not! For let God be true, but every man a liar. As it is written, ‘That You may be justified in Your words,
And may overcome when You are judged.’”
— Romans 3:3–4
Introduction
We live in a generation where truth is constantly questioned. People doubt God’s promises, reject His Word, and mock righteousness. Many ask, “If people stop believing in God, does that change who God is?” Others wonder, “If Christians fail, does that invalidate the Gospel?”
The Apostle Paul addresses this very issue in Romans 3. Israel had been entrusted with the oracles of God, yet many among them were unfaithful. Their unbelief raised an important question: Does human unbelief cancel God’s faithfulness?
Paul answers with thunderous certainty:
“Absolutely not!”
God’s truth does not depend on human approval. God remains faithful even when men are faithless.
I. HUMAN UNBELIEF CANNOT CANCEL GOD’S FAITHFULNESS
“For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make God’s faithfulness without effect?” (v.3)
Paul begins with a rhetorical question. Some Jews rejected God’s message and failed to trust Him. Yet their unbelief could not nullify God’s covenant promises.
The word “faithfulness” refers to God’s reliability, consistency, and covenant loyalty. God never breaks His Word.
Human beings are inconsistent:
👉We make promises and forget them.
👉We speak truth today and change tomorrow.
👉We are emotional, unstable, and imperfect.
But God is not like man.
The unbelief of man cannot weaken the integrity of God.
Illustration
Imagine a lighthouse standing on a rocky shore during a violent storm. Ships may ignore the light. Some captains may refuse to believe the danger is real. But their disbelief does not remove the rocks or extinguish the lighthouse. The lighthouse continues to shine faithfully.
Likewise, God’s truth shines whether people believe it or not.
👈Some people have stopped believing in holiness, but holiness is still right.
👈Some reject salvation through Christ, but Jesus is still the only way.
👈Some deny judgment, but judgment is still coming.
Your generation’s unbelief does not alter heaven’s truth.
II. GOD REMAINS TRUE EVEN WHEN MEN FAIL
“Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar…” (v.4)
Paul uses the strongest Greek expression of denial:
“Certainly not!” or “God forbid!”
Then he declares a foundational truth: “Let God be true, but every man a liar.”
This does not mean every human always lies verbally. It means human judgment is unreliable compared to God’s perfect truth.
God is:
✔️True in His character
✔️True in His promises
✔️True in His warnings
✔️True in His salvation
✔️True in His judgment
Men may distort truth, but God cannot lie.
Illustration
A young boy once argued with his mathematics teacher, insisting that 2 + 2 equals 5. He passionately defended his opinion. The entire class laughed, but the teacher calmly replied, “Your belief cannot change mathematical truth.”
Truth is not determined by sincerity or majority opinion.
Likewise, society may redefine morality, but God’s standards remain eternal.
👆If God says sin destroys, sin destroys.
🤞If God says repentance brings mercy, repentance brings mercy.
🤞If God says Christ saves, Christ saves.
God’s Word is not subject to cultural trends.
The world changes; God does not.
III. GOD IS JUSTIFIED IN ALL HIS WORDS
“That You may be justified in Your words…”
Paul quotes Psalm 51:4, where David confessed his sin after failing with Bathsheba. David acknowledged that God was righteous in His judgment.
To say God is “justified” means God is proven right.
✅Every prophecy fulfilled proves God right.
✅Every answered prayer proves God right.
✅Every warning ignored and later fulfilled proves God right.
In the end, nobody will stand before God and accuse Him of injustice.
Illustration
In a courtroom, evidence eventually silences every false accusation. At the final judgment, all creation will see that God was righteous all along.
Those who mocked holiness will discover God was right. Those who rejected Christ will discover God was right. Those who trusted Him will rejoice that God was faithful.
When God corrects us through His Word, He is right. When He disciplines us, He is right. When He delays an answer, He is right.
God never makes mistakes.
IV. GOD WILL OVERCOME EVERY CHALLENGE AGAINST HIS TRUTH
“…And might overcome when You are judged.”
Men may criticize God, question Scripture, and rebel against truth, but God will always prevail.
Atheists may debate Him.
Nations may resist Him.
False teachers may distort His Word. Yet God’s truth remains unconquerable.
History is filled with kingdoms that opposed God and vanished. But the Word of God still stands.
Illustration.
Voltaire, the famous French skeptic, once predicted Christianity would disappear within a century. Yet after his death, his house was reportedly used to distribute Bibles.
Men rise and fall. God’s Word endures forever.
Do not be discouraged because unbelief is increasing in the world.
Truth does not become false because it is unpopular.
Stand on God’s Word even when society rejects it.
Conclusion
Romans 3:3–4 teaches us three powerful realities:
1. Human unbelief cannot cancel God’s faithfulness.
2. God remains true even when men fail.
3. God will ultimately be vindicated before all creation.
The world may reject God, but God remains sovereign.
People may doubt His promises, but His Word cannot fail.
When everything around you is unstable, anchor your life in the unchanging truth of God.
The tragedy of unbelief is not that it weakens God—it does not. The tragedy is that unbelief separates people from the blessings of the faithful God.
A man can reject medicine, but his rejection does not remove the cure.
A sinner can reject Christ, but rejection does not remove salvation, God remains true.
The question today is not whether God is faithful.
The question is: Will you believe Him?
Altar Call
Today, God is calling you to trust His truth.
🌞Perhaps you have doubted God because of disappointment.
🌞Perhaps you have questioned His promises because of suffering.
🌞Perhaps you have lived according to human opinions instead of God’s Word.
But today the Lord reminds you: “Let God be true.”
Jesus Christ died for your sins, rose again, and offers eternal life to all who believe in Him. Do not allow unbelief to keep you from salvation.
If you are ready to surrender your life to Christ, pray:
“Lord Jesus, I confess that I am a sinner. I believe You died for me and rose again. Forgive my sins and cleanse my heart. Help me to trust Your truth above the opinions of men. From today, I surrender my life to You. Be my Lord and Savior. Amen.”
If you prayed that prayer sincerely, hold firmly to God’s Word, walk in faith, and continue in fellowship with believers.
For let God be true, and every man a liar.
