“The Patience and Faith of the Saints”

Text: “If anyone has an ear, let him hear. He who leads into captivity will go into captivity. He who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.” — Revelation 13:9–10

Introduction

The world often celebrates power, revenge, violence, and domination. Men believe that strength is proven by how much fear they can create. But God speaks differently. In the midst of persecution and wickedness, heaven gives a command:

“If anyone has an ear, let him hear.”

This is not merely advice; it is a divine warning and instruction. God is calling His people to understand something vital: evil may appear strong for a season, but divine justice will always prevail. The believer is therefore called not to panic, not to compromise, and not to fight with the weapons of darkness, but to stand in patience and faith.

1. “If Anyone Has an Ear, Let Him Hear”

 — God Demands Spiritual Attention

This phrase appears repeatedly throughout Scripture whenever God wants men to pay careful attention to an eternal truth.

Many people hear sermons but never truly listen. They hear with physical ears but not with spiritual understanding.

Jesus often used this expression because spiritual truth cannot be received casually.

The message here is urgent:

The world will become darker.

Wicked systems will rise.

Persecution may increase.

Evil may seem victorious temporarily. But God says: “Listen carefully before fear confuses you.”

The believer must develop spiritual discernment.

There is a difference between:

-hearing news and hearing God,

-hearing threats and hearing truth,

-hearing the world and -hearing the Spirit.

A saint who cannot hear God will easily be controlled by fear.

2. “He Who Leads into Captivity Will Go into Captivity” 

— God Is a God of Justice

This statement reveals the law of divine recompense.

Those who oppress others will eventually face judgment themselves.

History repeatedly proves this truth:

*proud kingdoms collapse,

*tyrants fall,

*oppressors are humbled,

*violent men perish by violence.

God is teaching believers not to envy the wicked.

Sometimes the righteous ask:

-“Why do evil people prosper?”

-“Why does injustice continue?”

-“Why are the innocent suffering?”

But Revelation reminds us that divine judgment may be delayed, but it is never absent.

The chains wicked men place on others may one day bind them.

This is why believers must never imitate the cruelty of the world. We are not called to conquer through wickedness.

3. “He Who Kills with the Sword Must Be Killed with the Sword” 

— Violence Cannot Produce Righteousness.

The sword symbolizes human force, intimidation, and fleshly power.

The kingdom of God is not advanced by hatred, revenge, or brutality.

Peter once drew a sword to defend Christ, but Jesus told him that those who live by the sword die by the sword.

God is teaching His church:

*revenge belongs to God,

*justice belongs to God,

j*udgment belongs to God.

Many believers become spiritually exhausted because they try to fight spiritual battles with human ✔️weapons:

✔️anger,

✔️manipulation,

✔️bitterness,

✔️retaliation.

But darkness cannot cast out darkness.

The Christian victory is not found in becoming like the enemy, but in remaining faithful to Christ even under pressure.

4. “Here Is the Patience and the Faith of the Saints” 

— The True Strength of Believers

This is the heart of the passage.

God does not say: “Here is the power of the saints.” or “Here is the political influence of the saints.”

He says: “Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.”

A. Patience

Biblical patience is not weakness. It is steadfast endurance under pressure.

It means: 

👆continuing to pray when answers delay,

👆continuing to obey when suffering persists,

👆continuing to trust when evil appears to prosper.

Patience is faith stretched over time.

B. Faith

Faith is confidence in God’s sovereignty even when circumstances appear frightening.

The saints in Revelation endured because they believed:

👍God still reigns,

👍Christ still wins,

👍truth still stands,

👍judgment is still coming,

👍eternal glory is still ahead.

The world may imprison the body, but it cannot imprison the soul that trusts in God.

Illustration

A farmer plants seeds and waits months before harvest. During the waiting season, nothing appears on the surface. An impatient man may think the seed has died. But beneath the ground, life is developing quietly.

In the same way, the believer may not immediately see God’s justice or reward, but heaven is still working beneath the surface.

The wicked may rise quickly like grass, but grass withers. The righteous endure like trees planted by rivers of water.

Lessons for Today

1. Do not fear temporary evil. No kingdom rises above God.

2. Do not repay evil with evil.

The methods of darkness can never produce light.

3. Learn to endure.

Faith that cannot wait is immature faith.

4. Keep listening to God.

In confusing times, spiritual hearing is essential.

5. Trust divine justice.

God keeps accurate records. Nothing escapes His sight.

Conclusion

Revelation 13 is a chapter filled with conflict and opposition, yet in the middle of it shines this powerful instruction:

“Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.”

The true believer is not identified merely by miracles, noise, or popularity, but by steadfast endurance and unwavering faith in Christ.

When the world becomes hostile:

✔️remain faithful,

✔️remain patient,

✔️remain holy,

✔️remain listening.

Because in the end, Christ triumphs, and those who endure with Him shall reign with Him.

Altar Call

Perhaps fear has weakened your faith. Perhaps bitterness has entered your heart because of injustice. Perhaps you have become tired of waiting on God.

Today, Christ calls you back to steadfast faith.

Do not surrender to fear. Do not surrender to revenge. Do not surrender to compromise.

Place your confidence again in the righteous Judge of all the earth.

Jesus is still Lord, and those who trust Him will never be ashamed.

Prayer

Lord, give me ears to hear Your voice in difficult times.

Father, strengthen my patience when trials increase.

Deliver me from bitterness, revenge, and hatred.

Help me trust Your justice even when evil appears strong.

Lord Jesus, keep my faith alive until the very end.
