“For His Mercy Endures Forever”

Text: Psalm 107:1

"Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his mercy continues forever."

Introduction

Psalm 107 opens with a call to thanksgiving. The psalmist does not merely tell God's people to thank Him; he gives the reason: God is good, and His mercy endures forever.

Human goodness is often limited and inconsistent, but God's goodness never changes. Human mercy may run out, but God's mercy is everlasting. Every breath we take, every provision we receive, every danger we escape, and every sin that is forgiven testifies to the enduring mercy of God.

The Christian life should therefore be marked by gratitude, worship, and praise.

I. Give Thanks Because the Lord Is Good

The goodness of God is one of His most wonderful attributes. Everything God does is good because He Himself is good.

When God created the world, He looked upon His creation and declared it good. His goodness is seen in:

°The gift of life.

°Daily provision.

°Protection from danger.

°The blessing of family and friends.

Most importantly, the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Even when circumstances are difficult, God's character remains good.

Illustration

A child may not understand why a loving parent takes him to the doctor for an injection. The child feels pain and may think the parent is being harsh. Yet the parent acts out of love and goodness.

Likewise, we may not understand every situation God allows, but we can trust His goodness because He always works for our ultimate good.

II. Give Thanks Because His Mercy Endures Forever

Mercy is God withholding the judgment we deserve and extending compassion instead.

The Bible repeatedly declares, "His mercy endures forever." This means:

°God's mercy is not temporary.

°God's mercy is not exhausted by our failures.

°God's mercy reaches from generation to generation.

The history of Israel is a testimony of God's enduring mercy. Though they often rebelled, God repeatedly forgave, restored, and delivered them.

The greatest display of mercy was at Calvary, where Jesus Christ bore our sins so that we might receive forgiveness and eternal life.

Illustration

A debtor owed a huge amount he could never repay. The day judgment was expected, the creditor canceled the entire debt and welcomed him as a friend.

That is what God has done for us through Christ. We owed a debt of sin we could never pay, but God's mercy provided forgiveness.

III. Thanksgiving Is the Proper Response to God's Goodness and Mercy

The psalm begins with a command: "Oh, give thanks to the LORD."

Thanksgiving is more than words. It is a lifestyle.

We thank God by:

°Praising Him in worship.

°Obeying His Word.

°Trusting Him in difficult times.

Testifying about His goodness to others.

Serving Him with gladness.

A grateful heart sees blessings where others see only burdens.

Illustration

Two people can experience the same storm. One complains about the rain while the other thanks God for the water that nourishes the earth. The difference is not the circumstance but the attitude.

Thanksgiving changes our perspective and reminds us of God's faithfulness.

IV. Remembering God's Mercy Strengthens Our Faith

Many believers become discouraged because they forget what God has already done.

Psalm 107 repeatedly recounts how God delivered people from trouble. Remembering past mercies builds confidence for present challenges.

The God who helped yesterday is still able today.

When you remember:

°The prayers He answered,

°The dangers He prevented,

°The provisions He supplied,

°The sins He forgave,

your faith grows stronger.

Conclusion

Psalm 107:1 gives us two eternal reasons to praise God:

1. The Lord is good

2. His mercy endures forever.

Circumstances may change. People may disappoint us. Seasons may come and go. But God's goodness never fails, and His mercy never runs out.

Therefore, let every believer cultivate a heart of gratitude and continually declare:

"Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his mercy continues forever."

Altar Call

Perhaps you have wandered away from God, burdened by guilt, failure, or discouragement. The good news is that His mercy still endures forever. Jesus Christ died and rose again so that sinners might receive forgiveness and new life.

Come to Him today in repentance and faith. His mercy is available to all who call upon His name.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You because You are good and Your mercy endures forever. Thank You for Your protection, provision, forgiveness, and unfailing love. Help us to live with grateful hearts and to remember Your goodness every day.

For those who are struggling, reveal Your mercy anew. For those who are far from You, draw them to Christ and grant them salvation. Let our lives become testimonies of Your goodness and grace.
