POWER OVER SIN

Text: Galatians 5:24

"And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires."

Introduction

One of the greatest battles every believer faces is not against witches, demons, or enemies; it is the battle against sin and the desires of the flesh. Many people want victory over sin, but they often fight with human strength and fail repeatedly. The good news of the gospel is that through Christ, believers have been given power over sin.

Galatians 5:24 teaches us that those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its sinful passions and desires. This means that through our union with Christ, the power of sin has been broken.

What Does It Mean to Have Power Over Sin?

1. Power over Sin comes through belonging to Christ

Paul says, "Those who are Christ's..."

Victory over sin begins with a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. A person cannot overcome sin permanently through self-discipline alone. True power comes from surrendering one's life to Christ.

John 8:36 says, "Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed."

Illustration: A branch cannot bear fruit if it is disconnected from the tree. Likewise, a believer cannot overcome sin apart from Christ.

2. The Flesh Must Be Crucified

The verse says believers have "crucified the flesh."

Crucifixion is painful and final. To crucify the flesh means refusing to give sinful desires control over our lives. It means daily saying "No" to anything that opposes God's will.

The flesh includes:

-Lust

-Anger

-Pride

-Bitterness

-Envy

-Immorality

-Worldliness

Power over sin is not merely resisting temptation occasionally; it is putting sinful desires to death.

3. Victory Requires Daily Surrender.

Crucifixion is not a one-time emotional experience; it is a daily commitment.

Jesus said in Luke 9:23, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me."

Every day we must choose:

-God's will over our desires.

-Holiness over compromise.

-Obedience over convenience.

4. The Holy Spirit Empowers Us to Overcome

The Christian life is not lived by human strength.

A few verses earlier, Paul says in Galatians 5:16, "Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."

The Holy Spirit gives:

-Strength to resist temptation.

-Wisdom to make right choices.

-Grace to live a holy life.

The more we yield to the Spirit, the less control sin has over us.

Benefits of Having Power Over Sin

1. A closer relationship with God.

2. Peace of conscience.

3. Spiritual growth and maturity.

4. Effective Christian witness.

5. Eternal reward and divine approval.

Conclusion.

Galatians 5:24 reminds us that believers are not slaves to sin. Through the death and resurrection of Christ, the power of the flesh has been broken. Those who belong to Christ must daily crucify sinful desires and walk in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Sin may knock at the door, but it does not have to rule over your life. In Christ, you have been given POWER OVER SIN.

Perhaps sin has been controlling your life. Maybe you have struggled with habits, addictions, anger, unforgiveness, or secret sins. Jesus Christ offers freedom today.

Come to Him in repentance and faith. Surrender every area of your life to Him and receive the power to live victoriously.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank You for sending Jesus Christ to set us free from the power of sin. Help us to crucify the flesh and all its sinful desires. Fill us with the Holy Spirit and give us strength to resist temptation. Let every chain of sin be broken, and help us to live holy and victorious lives. May our lives bring glory to Your name. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
