Text: “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” — Proverbs 14:12
Introduction
One of the greatest dangers in life is not choosing what is obviously wrong. The greatest danger is choosing what appears to be right but is actually leading to destruction. Satan rarely presents evil as ugly. He disguises it as wisdom, progress, freedom, success, and even religion.
The tragedy of Proverbs 14:12 is not that a man deliberately chose death. It is that he sincerely believed he was walking the right path.
This verse teaches that human judgment without God is a dangerous compass.
Jeremiah 10:23 — "O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps."
1. The deception of Human Reasoning
"There is a way which seems right..."
Notice that Solomon did not say the way is right. He said it seems right.
Our eyes can deceive us.
Our emotions can deceive us.
Our experiences can deceive us.
The first sin in Eden happened because Eve judged by appearance.
Genesis 3:6
"The tree was good for food... pleasant to the eyes... desirable to make one wise."
What looked like wisdom became the doorway to death.
Today many people say,
- "Follow your heart."
- "Trust your feelings."
- "Do what makes you happy."
But Scripture warns,
Jeremiah 17:9
"The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked."
The heart can become a false prophet.
2. Wrong Roads usually begin beautifully
No traveler begins a journey expecting disaster.
The road to destruction is usually:
- comfortable
- popular
- exciting
- profitable
Jesus described two roads.
Matthew 7:13-14»
•One road is broad.
•One is narrow.
•One is crowded.
•One is lonely.
•One feels easy.
•One demands surrender.
Yet the broad road ends in destruction.
The narrow road ends in life.
The destination matters more than the scenery.
3. Success Is Not Always God's Approval.
Many mistake prosperity for divine approval.
A person may gain wealth while losing character.
He may gain followers while losing God.
He may gain the whole world while losing his soul.
Jesus asked, in Mark 8:36
"For what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?"
A road filled with applause can still end in eternal regret.
Never judge a road by how many people are walking on it.
Judge it by where it leads.
4. Religion without Relationship an also seem Right.
Jesus warned about people who believed they were serving God.
Matthew 7:22-23
"Lord, Lord..."
®They preached.
®They performed miracles.
®They cast out demons.
Yet Christ said,
"I never knew you."
One of the most frightening truths is that even religious activity can become a road that seems right but ends in spiritual death when Christ is absent.
Christianity is not merely attending church.
It is walking daily with Jesus.
5. Every decision is a Road
Life is not made of isolated choices.
Every choice creates a direction.
Every direction creates a destination.
A single compromise becomes a habit.
A habit becomes a lifestyle.
A lifestyle becomes a destiny.
Small decisions determine great endings.
That is why Proverbs repeatedly urges believers to seek God's wisdom before acting.
6. God's Way Often Feels Difficult at First.
God's path may require:
- forgiveness instead of revenge
- humility instead of pride
- holiness instead of pleasure
- patience instead of haste
- obedience instead of convenience
The cross looked like defeat.
Yet it became the greatest victory in history.
Sometimes God's road feels harder because it leads upward.
7. Jesus is not merely showing the Way—He is the Way
The greatest answer to Proverbs 14:12 is found in Christ.
John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life."
Notice Jesus did not say,
"I know the way."
He said,
"I am the way."
Outside Him every road eventually leads to death.
In Him every surrendered life leads to eternal life.
Altar call:
Ask yourself:
- Am I following God's Word or my own opinions?
- Am I walking by faith or by feelings?
- Am I pursuing success or obedience?
- Is my life becoming more like Christ?
- If I continue on my present path, where will I end?
The future is hidden inside today's direction.
Conclusion
•Many roads look attractive.
•Many voices sound convincing.
Many philosophies promise freedom.
But appearances can be fatal.
The safest path is not the one that feels right.
The safest path is the one God declares right.
Every generation must decide whether to trust human wisdom or divine revelation.
The road you choose today will determine the eternity you experience tomorrow.
•Choose Christ.
•Choose truth.
•Choose life.
Deuteronomy 30:19
"I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live."»
Prayer
Heavenly Father, deliver us from the deception of our own understanding. Give us discernment to reject every path that only appears right but leads to destruction. Teach us to trust Your Word above our feelings, Your wisdom above human reasoning, and Your Son above every worldly path. Keep our feet on the narrow road that leads to life. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
