Text: Psalm 1:1
"Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scornful." — Psalm 1:1
Introduction.
The book of Psalms opens with a profound contrast between two kinds of people: the blessed and the wicked. Before speaking about prosperity, success, or victory, God first speaks about choices. True blessing does not begin with what we possess but with whom we follow.
Psalm 1:1 teaches that a blessed life is not accidental—it is the result of deliberate separation from ungodliness and wholehearted devotion to God.
1. The Blessed Man Refuses Wrong Counsel
"Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly."
Every person is influenced by someone's advice. The question is: Whose counsel are you following?
The counsel of the ungodly often sounds attractive:
- "Everyone is doing it."
- "Compromise a little."
- "God understands."
But God's wisdom often opposes worldly wisdom.

Proverbs 14:12
"There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death."
Your destiny is shaped by the voices you choose to believe.
2. The Blessed Man Refuses the Path of Sin.
"Nor stand in the path of sinners."
Notice the progression:
- First, he walks.
- Then he stands.
Sin always seeks to slow your spiritual journey until you become comfortable with what once disturbed your conscience.
Many believers do not begin by planning to fall. They simply remain too long in dangerous places.
Joseph refused to remain in temptation and fled from Potiphar's wife (Genesis 39:12). Sometimes victory is found in running away from sin.
3. The Blessed Man Refuses the Seat of the Scornful.
"Nor sit in the seat of the scornful."
The final stage is sitting—becoming settled in rebellion.
The scornful mock holiness, ridicule righteousness, and reject correction.
When a person reaches this point, sin is no longer a struggle—it becomes a lifestyle.
Proverbs 9:8
"Do not rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you."
A heart that despises correction closes the door to God's blessing.
4. Sin Progresses Unless It Is Stopped.
Psalm 1 reveals a dangerous downward progression:
- Walking — listening.
- Standing — lingering.
- Sitting — settling.
Every great spiritual fall begins with one small compromise.
Satan rarely destroys a believer instantly. He deceives gradually.
Therefore, believers must guard:
- Their ears.
- Their eyes.
- Their companions.
- Their hearts.
5. The Blessed Life Belongs to Those Who Delight in God.
The secret of separation is not merely avoiding evil but loving God.
Psalm 1:2 says:
"But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night."
A heart full of God's Word leaves little room for worldly corruption.
The blessed believer feeds daily on Scripture, seeks God's presence, and obeys His voice.
Conclusion.
God's blessing is connected to our daily decisions.
Ask yourself:
- Whose counsel am I following?
- Where am I standing?
- Where have I become comfortable that displeases God?
The blessed life begins when we choose God's way over the world's way.
Prayer.
Heavenly Father, deliver me from every ungodly influence. Give me discernment to reject evil counsel, strength to avoid the path of sinners, and humility to never join the seat of the scornful. Fill my heart with delight in Your Word, and establish my life in Your truth. Let my life bear fruit that glorifies You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Declaration Prayer Points.
1. I reject every ungodly counsel assigned to divert my destiny, in Jesus' name.
2. I will not stand in the path that leads to destruction.
3. Every evil influence over my life is broken by the power of God.
4. Lord, plant me beside the rivers of Your Word and make me fruitful.
5. My life shall be identified with righteousness, favor, and divine blessing.
6. I receive the grace to walk faithfully with Christ until the end. Amen.
